Psychodynamic Therapy

Counselling or psychotherapy?
What's the difference?

Counselling tends to focus on specific issues and can help to address a particular problem, such as addiction or stress management. Psychotherapy is more long-term than counselling and tends to focus on a broader range of issues.

What matters is the relationship between you and your therapist. In a safe non judgmental environment, you will be able to express your feelings and find better ways to cope with feelings and fears.

Changing the way you think and behave will improve your mental and emotional wellbeing, improve relationships in your life – including with yourself!

About Psychodynamic Psychotherapy:

The psychodynamic approach is derived from psychoanalysis, but focuses on immediate problems to try to provide a quicker solution. It stresses the importance of the unconscious and past experience in shaping current behaviour.

The success of this approach depends on the relationship we build together as therapist and client. This therapeutic relationship, where you will be encouraged to talk about your significant childhood relationships with your parents and others also uses similar techniques to psychotherapy, including free association, interpretation and especially transference, where feelings you experienced in previous significant relationships are projected onto the therapist.

This process can lead to deep and lasting change.

Please get in touch if you would like to meet to discuss our working together.

AIT - a unique way of working with trauma.

I use a unique method in my work with clients affected by trauma. As a member of AIT Europe UK, I work to release the negative energy charge that traumatic experiences can leave in the body. This releases stress, distressing emotions, bodily-held trauma and disables negative core beliefs. This therapy tends to be longer term though this varies depending on the client.

What is Trauma?

Going through very stressful, frightening or distressing events is sometimes called trauma. When we talk about emotional or psychological trauma, we might mean:

  • situations or events we find traumatic
  • how we’re affected by our experiences.

Traumatic events can happen at any age and can cause long-lasting harm. Everyone has a different reaction to trauma, so you might notice any effects quickly, or a long time afterwards.

What is AIT?

AIT enables the therapist and client to:

  • Connect childhood experiences with recent trauma
  • Link mind and body symptoms of distress and conflict
  • Identify and clear whole patterns of trauma
  • Explore obstacles to being fully present to oneself and others
  • Identify and heal the damage to an individual’s spirituality

AIT was developed in the US by Dr Asha Clinton, an Energy Psychotherapist.  AIT is an integrative because it synthesises the following psychotherapeutic modalities:

  • Psychodynamic: understanding the unconscious process where our past experiences of early and significant relationships influence how we experience ourselves and others now
  • Cognitive-Behavioural : effecting healing by understanding and changing our beliefs and behaviours
  • Jungian or Transpersonal : integrating the symbolic and spiritual realm to experience our wholeness and to access our own inner guidance
  • Energy Psychology: based on a premise that everything –including our thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, memories and trauma – consists of energy. Trauma blocks the flow of energy in the body – AIT helps to release it.
